System Integrators Must Become System Designers
The Translation Problem · Apr 2026 · 5 minIn the AI era, system integrators must evolve from implementing technology to designing decision systems.
Integration is no longer enough
Traditional system integration focused on connecting platforms: ERP to CRM, data warehouses to analytics tools, front-end to back-end systems. That work still matters. But it is no longer where value is created.
AI shifts the focus from connecting systems to shaping how decisions flow across them.
The center of gravity is moving up the stack
Large consulting and technology services firms are publicly repositioning around AI-enabled transformation, not just delivery. Because clients do not just need models, pipelines, and integrations. They need redesigned workflows, decision ownership clarity, and governance embedded into execution.
That requires a different skillset entirely.
This is a design problem, not just an engineering one
The hardest questions now are: where should AI make decisions versus humans? How do exceptions get handled? How do you measure decision quality over time?
Those are not integration questions. They are system design questions. And most organizations do not have a clear owner for them.
Implication
If you are leading transformation, your mandate is no longer to deliver systems. It is to design how the organization makes decisions with AI inside the loop.
